Dr. Adriana Schwartz: Understanding ozone therapy - benefits, applications, and expert insights

Ozone therapy is gaining renewed attention in the medical community due to its expanding applications and the growing need for integrative approaches in chronic and degenerative conditions. Unlike alternative medicine, ozone therapy is a scientifically grounded complementary treatment that uses precisely controlled doses of medical ozone, generated from medical oxygen, to deliver therapeutic effects.

We spoke with dr Adriana Schwartz, a renowned medical professional with over 35 years of experience. She is a Surgeon and Obstetrician-Gynecologist, University Expert in Ozone Therapy and Ozonized Concentrated Growth Factors, and an expert in stem cell therapy. Dr. Schwarz is the and President of the Medical Spanish Scientific Association of Ozonetherapy (Aepromo). She has authored several scientific papers and books, and serves as Director and Editor of the Ozone-therapy Global Journal.

In this interview, dr Schwartz shares her expert insights on the mechanisms, clinical indications, and safety of ozone therapy.

What is ozone therapy and how does it work?

„Ozone therapy is a specialty already. It's one of the specialties of medicine. In fact, we have a diploma course of 375 hours to study, over 8 months. It has a lot of science behind it. It's not alternative medicine; it’s complementary medicine which works with medical ozone obtained from a medical generator, Class 2B, and medical oxygen.”

„Ozone therapy works with these generators, and the main properties are anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and it helps control oxidative stress. It triggers the main antioxidant proteins that build our defensive shield in the organism. So, the four main actions of ozone are: pain management, anti-inflammatory action, analgesic action, and antioxidant effects.”

What is the main benefits of ozone therapy?

„Ozone therapy primarily acts as:

  • Pain management – often more effective than corticoids and fast-acting.
  • Anti-inflammatory – reduces inflammation in affected tissues.
  • Analgesic – helps alleviate pain directly.
  • Antioxidant – activates the body’s defensive proteins and controls oxidative stress.

These combined effects make it a valuable tool, especially for patients with chronic pain and metabolic disorders.”

Conditions treated with ozone therapy

“The main conditions where ozone therapy works best are:

  • diabetes and metabolic problems,
  • chronic pain syndromes,
  • inflammatory diseases.

In Spain, we have 26 pain management units in public and university hospitals working with ozone therapy. The therapy is integrated into the public health system and is especially effective in pain management, sometimes acting faster and better than traditional medications.”

Advice for doctors and patients

„For doctors proper education is crucial. A short 24-hour introduction course is not enough. Real training lasts about 8 months to understand all mechanisms and applications. Ozone therapy is a medical specialty, not a simple procedure.

„For patients - make sure your doctor has the proper formation, certification, or diploma. Just as you check a doctor’s license, you should check their ozone therapy credentials. This ensures the therapy is safe, effective, and scientifically grounded.”
